often times i sit back and wonder...was it really worth going through school for 6+ years to get my degrees? why you ask? well, the economy! i feel that sometimes i would have been better starting work when i was 16 at say a fast food place and working my way up. i probably would have been a manger by now and making what i am making now salary wise with no school loans to pay back!?!? could have, should have, would have, moment i guess. it looks like those with a degree no longer have jobs available in their field and/or have to take jobs in a totally different area or are over qualified so can not find a job. sometimes i feel that with a master's degree i work for much less pay than i deserve, but i do it b/c i can and it gives me something to do and i am good at it and in the grand scheme of things...IT IS A JOB! i miss the days while i was going through high school and first few years of college where your "internship" period basically landed you a job if you did well. now your "internship" period is "volunteer work/free labor" no job offer after, but you put in so many hours and did so many projects to prove yourself. oh well...at least I made A's in all of them, so that is something right? something better will come along either before the economy gets back on its feet or after. so... my question to you is: Is a College degree or Higher degree worth it, especially now/today?

pretty much sums it all up! |
~eloquently rambling...
I think it all depends on the direction you want to go. Anymore is seems people equate a college degree to a high school diploma. It's crazy!
ReplyDeletethat is true. it is much easier to get a degree now with the online options.
DeleteI think your actual degree is more important than having one. All of my fellow BS in food science grads had jobs within months of graduation (several of us have even successfully changed jobs). A lot of my friends with BAs (especially in psych or general business fields) still don't have a real, grown-up job.
ReplyDeletei agree with you there Lisa. depending on your major a lot of times equals how fast you are picked up. did you major in Food Science? i took the teacher/health route. now that i am older and more focused...i think i can crack organic chemistry now!
DeleteI think the degree is worth it, but whether the person has a vision and/or dream makes the difference. Degree just exposes us to some knowledge but we cannot limit ourselves with it. We must have visions of what we want to do and be...
ReplyDeleteUgo...i like that! a degree just exposes us to some knowledge :) it is worth it in the end or they will not be promoting education, education, education!
DeleteHey I'm randomly commenting on your page but I saw you on Ashley Lately page. Any who you just touch on a topic that has been really sensitive in my life. I recently graduated with my bachelors and I plan to go back for my masters. I always believed going to college was like entering the 13th grade, it is just what you are suppose to do to get ahead. I have many college friends who feel the same but when I came back home I feel like I've entered an endless debate on which is better degree or actual experience (the main people who are saying experience is better than a degree never attended college). But in my opinion degree always trumps experience because my degree is my experience. It is on my resume in plan black ink. Also a bachelors is almost the equivalent to a high school diploma. I find many employers wanting a bachelors degree minimum for something a high school graduated can easily handle. Sooo I'm sorry for rambling but be proud of your education and go as far as you possibly can... It may take awhile for all those years for the completion of your degree to pay off because of the economy but trust me eventually it will!!
ReplyDeleteAshley, thank you for you comment and stopping by. you are right. a degree will always help you rather than hurt you in the long run. i am proud of my degrees and plan to continue on for more. what did you get your bachelor's in? i think we have moved from brain power to manual labor power and skills are becoming a big thing rather than having the intellect to do something.
DeleteThe degree is worth it. I mean would you really want to be working as a fast food manager for the rest of your life? For some it is their calling, but is it yours? I know it's not mine! My job right now is just that, a job. But I am going for a degree because I want to do something with my life. Sure a degree takes time and money, but the economy would suck either way. Hopefully all of us will have our degrees pay off eventually.
ReplyDeleteRisa, i agree! i know it is worth it at the end, but having a steady job would be great! fast food is not my dream or goal at all. the economy can only get better not worse right?
